sewing plans (madness and babbling)

I bought some new patterns and went shopping the other day. Tons of new inspiration is buzzing in my head!

I saw a lot of lovely retro/modern designs in the stores. It seams the bare tummy is back. I kind of like this as I'm one of those persons that do have a flat tummy. I'm flat everywhere in fact, and sometimes fashion just makes me look like a little kid who is wearing her parents clothes. In hopes that these kind of clothes will flatter me I'm suddenly planning on a whole wardrobe. Somewhere inside of me a small voice is talking about the practicality of having part of your torso bare, but my sewing craziness got the upper hand. For now. I do love the combinations they are making for these designs. Pairing them with an A line skirt of shorts and jeans or shorts. I especially like how normal and everyday most of these look. The neckline variations also seem quite endless. I'm head over heels with all of these possibilities.

I've collected a little gallery of forever 21 examples of this new trend. I love LOVE LOVVEEEE all of these! I especially like the designs with sleeves though. I'm also completely in love with the black lace top with the deep back neckline. I short I want nearly all of these, in some sort of version. I think I'll sift through my pile of left over fabrics to start on some of these beauty's. I want an A line skirt and some retro shorts to go with them as well. Lucky thing there is an extra fabric fair soon.

I've also been eyeing  this butterick pattern for a while now. It looks a lot like the left shirt on the lowest row in my opinion. Well the pattern looks better but I want something different still. Certainly on my to do list now!

To finish of I couldn't get myself not to copy these gorgeous dresses. Although they might be a bit short, I think they are very very flattering. The left one actually reminds me of the Marilyn dress in the seven year itch I spoke of before and the right one has a nice gathered detail in the front I like. It reminds me of some burda patterns I've seen. The middle one is just amazing. Its one of those killer dresses. Hot without being vulgar, classy but with an edge. delicious.

Oh AND I bought the most recent burda style. I must say that it's one of the best they published since I started religiously checking out weather the magazine was any good every month. Witch means in almost 3 years. I love a lot of the designs a lot. I think I will need to make at least three more dresses now. oh well, you can never have enough clothes can you?

Fabric Fair haul

As I told you before I went to a fabric fair this weekend and I wanted to share the fabrics I bought there, and what projects I plan to use them for.

Firstly I bought this cute black polka dotted fabric for a Mc calls summer dress. I actually wanted stripes, but since I found this for two euros a meter well, what can I say... I have tons of striped clothing in my closet anyway...

Then there's tons of creamy white fabric, this might become a Marilyn Monroe dress, or just a couple of shirts, since my favourite ones all got pink in the washing machine some time ago. I love the Monroe dress, although I think it won't flatter my figure, and it's one of those dresses that will stay in the closet most of the time, on the other hand, my copy cat side is itching for it, and I would actually like to experiment with pleating fabrics at home.

Then there's a dark teal fabric that I plan to combine with Orange-Yellow ribbon to make the Butterick pattern I told you about in my first post. I'm really in love with this colour!

I also bought a nice and warm looking fabric at another incredible discount for the Joan dress. Since it's spring here, winter fabrics where hard to find and I really had to look for something that could emulate the coaty look of the dress. I think with enough interfacing this fabric might just pull that off.

Lastly I purchased tons of fabric for the Vogue evening dress. Since i could not find any chiffon anywhere (for less than 40 euro a meter, since I needed 6 that was not an option...), and not in the colour I wanted, I had to settle for these mint green coupons. I've never wore mint so I'm kinda anxious to what the result will be, since I was aiming for more of a teal colour. Might change my mind on this fabric in May on the next fabric fair.

Lastly, well really lastly, I bought something cute for my boyfriends birthday, but I'm not telling. Only that I will blog about it, after his birthday that is.

plans for the summer

There are some iconic dresses we all wish we had a copy off, and replica patterns and dresses are enormously expensive, mostly won't fit right or need a lot of work to be turned into something wearable. It is my dream to have a wardrobe that is at the same time classy, vintage and thoroughly me, but that day is still a long long way off.

I recently finished my first really wearable dress and I am so proud of this achievement that I cannot wait until I do it again. I had so much fun tweaking the pattern to my liking and seeing all the pieces come together in the end. I started out from B5603 but ended up changing a whole lot. (Here's a picture of the dress in it's nearly finished state). I really love the multi-coloured dinosaur fabric!!

This however leaves me in the pleasant stage of picking out my future projects and that is what this post will be about. I will probably cover the making of these dresses (and certainly any pattern alterations or design) here on this blog.

I have recently been obsessed by the subway dress from Marilyn Monroe's classic movie the seven year itch. After hours of searching the Internet for clues as to the exact construction of the dress I gave in and watched it. I was also blown away by the simple sheath dress she is wearing in the beginning of the movie. I would love to have a version of both of those dresses!

One of the blogs I lurk around is Julia Bobbin's. She really has an extraordinary eye for potentially awesome patterns. She has inspired me to do two projects, firstly her awesome mad man challenge really gets me. I was planning to make this gorgeous faux wrap dress of Joan's. I also fell in love with the dress she did for the second week of project sewn, and I am dieing to get myself a version of that dress as well.

lastly I'm invited to the wedding of a fellow student of mine, and as this is the first real wedding I have received an invitation to, I want to make the dress myself. I fell in love with this gorgeous vogue, but I am totally afraid of overdressing for the event (so I will probably make the train a lot shorter). I certainly wouldn't want to outclass the bridesmaids. Butt still, what better excuse to wear something like this than a wedding?

Since I am buying all my fabric this Sunday I get to work out a lot of the design choices I want to make now. Wonderful! I will get back to you on that.
